Turkish Airlines EuroLeague Round 12 MVP: Vincent Poirier, Baskonia Vitoria Gasteiz

As the second rookie to become the Turkish Airlines EuroLeague MVP of the Round this season, Baskonia Vitoria Gasteiz big man Vincent Poirier claimed the honor in style on Friday. His 2 free throws with 3.1 seconds left lifted Baskonia to an 81-82 road win against Anadolu Efes Istanbul in a comeback that his fingerprints were all over. Poirier finished with a performance index rating of 35, tops among all players the round, and 15 of that total came in the game’s last 5 minutes, 35 seconds, when Baskonia rallied from 76-67 behind to win. He also established personal highs with 16 points, 12 rebounds and 5 blocks, with the latter matching the most by any EuroLeague player this season. Poirier made 7 of 10 two-point shots and went 2 for 4 from the free throw line, with his 2 makes being the game-winners. He also dished 3 assists, had 1 steal and drew 4 fouls on a memorable night for the 24-year-old. Round 12’s second-highest index rating belonged to Nando De Colo of CSKA Moscow, who posted a season-high 26 points to go 6 assists, 5 rebounds, 1 steal and 8 drawn fouls in a home victory over Maccabi FOX Tel Aviv. James Feldeine of Crvena Zvezda mts Belgrade and James Augustine of Unicaja Malaga share third place with PIRs of 31. Feldeine scored 14 of his 26 points in the final 5 minutes of Zvezda’s come-from-behind road win over Valencia Basket. He made 8 of 10 two-pointers and all 10 of his free throws attempts. Augustine’s PIR was a career high, as were his 12 rebounds and 5 steals. He also scored 14 points as Unicaja downed Khimki Moscow Region to end a five-game losing streak. Rounding out the list of top performers in Round 12 are Jan Vesely of reigning champion Fenerbahce Dogus Istanbul and Norris Cole of Maccabi, each with PIRs of 29 in losing efforts. Vesely had 20 points, 5 rebounds, 4 blocks, 2 assists and 9 drawn fouls in a home loss to Zalgiris Kaunas, while Cole posted 24 points, 7 assists, 4 steals and 3 rebounds in Moscow against CSKA.

Individual highs: Vladimir Stimac of Anadolu Efes Istanbul, 17 rebounds

Alexey Shved led all scorers in Round 12 with 28 points. He took over the sole possession of the first place on the scoring leaderboard with 21.5 per contest. Vladimir Stimac of Efes set his career high and a new Euroleague season high with 17 rebounds. Stimac jumped atop of the rebounding rankings with an average of 8.1 per game. Nick Calathes of Panathinaikos Superfoods Athens dished 12 assists in Round 12, more than any other player. Calathes also averages more assists than any other EuroLeague player this season, 7.9 per contest. Augustine had 5 steals, his career-best and the most in Round 12. Fenerbahce’s Brad Wanamaker, who had 4 steals this week, is the new season leader with 1.7 per game. This round’s MVP, Vincent Poirier of Baskonia, led all players with 5 blocks. Bryant Dunston of Efes and Tibor Pleiss of Valencia share the season lead with 1.6 blocks per night. There were four double-doubles in Round 12. Apart from Poirier (16 points, 12 rebounds) and Augustine (14 points, 12 rebounds), Stimac added 10 points to his 17 rebounds, while Sergio Rodriguez of CSKA Moscow scored 15 points and dished 11 assists.
